I love how the word “yet” is in the middle of this verse. It’s not “and”, as it might be assumed that he would sleep and wake up like any normal day. It looks like he was suprised. As if he went to sleep out of pure exhaustion – simply unable to go on any longer – and when he woke up gave praise to God that he was still alive.
The last part of that section says “I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side” (vs 6). Why was he not afraid? Because the Lord was watching over him. Let that sink in. Don’t pass it over. The Lord was watching over him.
Lord, open each heart to be willing to trust you. As your word says, your unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in you. May we take you at your word, trust in you, and live each day in peaceful expectancy that there’s nothing you can’t work out for those who love you.
